Stargazing at Widener University

Widener University Observatory offers free public viewings

The Widener University Observatory will have public stargazing sessions on Monday's Sept. 20 and Sept. 27 from 8-9 p.m. All sessions are free and open to the public.

All are invited to see the stars, planets and other celestial wonders using the observatory’s 12- and 16-inch computerized reflecting telescopes. Widener astronomy professors, with assistance from undergraduate students, will be on hand to offer assistance.

The viewings will run throughout the school year on Monday nights and one Friday night a month. Highlights of the fall season include the planets Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune, along with other spectacular objects such as the blue-yellow double stars Albireo and Almach, the globular star cluster M13 and the Ring Nebula in Lyra. The winter/spring season will feature planets Jupiter and Saturn, the binary stars Rigel, Cor Caroli and Izar, and also the Orion Nebula and the globular star cluster M3.

For a complete schedule and to register, visit www.widener.edu/stargazing or call 610-499-4003. Because space is limited, participants are encouraged to register in advance.

The Widener University Observatory is located on the 5th floor of Kirkbride Hall on 17th and Walnut Streets in Chester, Pa.
