Summer Camps at Twirl

Summer at Twirl Means Sold Out Camps and Lots of Fun!

Summer is a slow time for most dance studios, but not at Twirl, located in Newtown Square. Summertime is one of the busiest seasons for Twirl, who already sold out some of their 2020 summer performance camps hours after registration opened. A 2019 Best of Main Line winner for Summer Day Camp, Twirl offers high-energy, crazy fun camps with super popular themes like Frozen II, Star Wars, Zombies (the Disney Channel movies, including Zombies 2 which will debut on Feb. 14), Trolls World Tour (the new Trolls movie that premiers in April), and the Lego movie series. Twirl owner and former Disney dancer Sam Sinns anticipated the popularity of Twirl summer camps this season and has already added overflow camps to compensate for some of the sold-out camps. So there’s still room!!!
“What makes Twirl summer camps so popular?” muses Sam. “I guess it’s because we commit to every theme 110%. We make sure that every day is action-packed. And our staff is off the rails in their energy and enthusiasm.” When asked to describe what goes on in a typical Twirl half-day camp, he says every day is like a giant three-hour party. There’s dancing, trivia games, obstacle courses, crafts, snack, and it’s go go go from one activity to the other with no downtime. And every camp ends with a performance for family and friends, which is definitely one of the highlights.

Along with themed camps, Twirl offers a summer dance intensive where students feed their passion for dance with daily classes in Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Acrobatics, and Hip Hop. And there’s also a full-day Seussical Jr. musical theatre performance camp in partnership with The Handwork Studio. In Seussical camp, performers will spend the days rehearsing Seussical Jr. and will also sew their own costumes, which they get to keep. The folks from The Handwork Studio will set up an entire costume making wonderland at Twirl including sewing machines, and walk the performers through the process of making their own costumes. Twirl camp “quadruple threats” will sing, dance, act, and sew every day throughout the week, which ends with two performances of Seussical Jr.
There’s a lot going on at Twirl with themed camps, summer dance intensive, and musical theatre costume making camp. “Summer at Twirl is one of my favorite times of the year,” remarks Sam. “To see the smiles on the kids’ faces and how excited they are to walk through the door every day. There’s nothing like it!”

Meet Dance Studio Owmer and Former Disney Performer at Twirl Open House

On September 17 from 1:00-3:00pm former Disney dancer, Sam Sinns, will be hosting an open house at his new dance studio, Twirl. Twirl is located at 3544 West Chester Pike in the Newtown Square Shopping Center (the entrance is behind the Sprint Store on Clover Lane).

The open house will be a chance for kids and parents to meet Sam and some of his team of teaching artists. Visitors will also be able to tour the dance studio, enjoy snacks and drinks, and take free sample dance classes as well. Dance classes for ages 8 and up include hip hop from 1:10-1:30pm taught by Tiffany Holmes, a company member of Philadelphia’s Just Sole: Street Dance Theater; Twirl’s owner, Sam Sinns, will bring his 20 years of professional dance experience to students in a jazz class from 1:40-2:00pm; and Dana Powers-Klooster, who has an MFA in Dance from the University of Iowa, will give a sample ballet class from 2:10-2:30pm.

Sam will wrap things up by teaching a fun jazz-based dance class for students age 5-7 from 2:40-3:00pm.

Sam says that he is excited for area families to see the new dance studio. “I’ve brought a lot of my own personal history into the space. There are a lot of cool things that I’ve collected from

Disney on display on the lobby walls. There are pictures, Disney awards that I’ve won, and things that are exclusive to Disney cast members that you can’t buy in stores. It’s like a little Disney museum,” explains Sam. He also notes that another point of interest is the hardwood floor in one of the dance rooms which is believed to be old flooring from the Conestoga High School gym. “I like that my space has history. I like stories and it’s cool to me that even the floor has its own story to tell.”

Families who attend the open house can also save up to $50 by receiving free registration when they register for classes at the event.

Twirl is a dance studio that offers dance instruction to students age 3 and older. Classes begin on September 19 and include ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, contemporary, modern, musical theatre, acrobatics, preschool dance and dance for Down syndrome students. More information about Twirl can be found at www.twirlperformingarts.com.

New Dance Studio - Fireworks Dance Center

Moms and Dads, there is a new dance studio in town. Fireworks Dance Center is located at 1326 MacDade Boulevard, in the MacDade Crossing Shopping Center at MacDade & Fairview, in Woodlyn, Ridley Township, PA. It’s just seconds away from the intersection of I-95 and I-476 (the Blue Route).

This warm and welcoming studio opened its doors in October 2012 under the leadership of Miss Maggie Simmonds, a dance mom. It was Miss Maggie’s dream to begin a dance studio that not only focused on teaching children dance, but that also gave the parents and guardians a place for the grown-ups too.

Take a fun and relaxing class for yourself, while your kids are dancing and doing their thing in the next studio! Or take advantage of the Wi-fi and the homework table to get caught up on work or your e-mail.
Fireworks’ motto is “Dance for Kids – and Grown-ups Too!”  Whether you took dance classes as a child or you’ve never stepped foot in a dance studio, the Adult classes are right for you. FDC teachers have the knack for teaching all levels of students, and are especially thrilled to watch brand new dancers learn and have fun.  And dance class is so much more fun than a treadmill.  There’s no commitment for Adult Classes – whatever frequency works with your busy schedule.  You can pay as you go or you can buy a Class Card (in denominations of 5-classes or 10-classes), and save a few dollars per class.
Current adult classes include Tap, Salsa Shine (no partner needed), Yoga & Conditioning, Modern & Conditioning, Cardio Hip Hop, Jazz Impact, Ballet & Tone, Ballet Barre & Conditioning, and more.
Fireworks also offers entry-level, age-appropriate classes for the Older Child.  Some older children decide they want to dance at a later age (10+), but find themselves in beginner classes with 5-year olds.  This can be intimidating and frustrating to an older child who wants to learn in a classroom of peers.  Even if your child didn’t start dancing at the age of 3, there’s a place for your pre-teen or teenager at Fireworks.  Recital and non-recital class options for the older student.

The teachers (click here to see their bios) are dedicated education professionals and amazing dancers who teach more than proper technique and form.
The facility (click here to see photos) is bright and spacious, with 2 studios featuring high-quality sound and sprung-wood floors. The studio has air conditioning and a comfortable, spacious waiting room with one-way mirrors to observe every class.
There is PLENTY OF FREE PARKING with easy entrances/exits to the large shopping center.  Fireworks Dance Center is conveniently located in the MacDade Crossing shopping center (next to Raymour & Flanigan) with many amenities.

Boys Ballet Classes- One year of free instruction!

June 11, 2011
at
2:00 pm

International Ballet Classique (IBC) is pleased to announce a special "one year" TUITION-FREE program for boys ages 7 through 18! This unique program is designed to enhance athletic skills, flexibility and strength. Participation in this special program includes opportunities to perform in our future ballet performances. All students in this special program must audition for possible acceptance. No prior dance experience is required.

Boys in this special Vaganova-based training program will build stamina, flexibility, muscle tone and strength, including balance and coordination using exercises and dance movements. According to IBC Artistic Director Denis Gronostayskiy, "Our special one year program for boys is a beneficial activity both mentally and physically. It is a mentally demanding and a physically challenging program. Boys will do much running, jumping and sports-related physical activity in a large studio rather than on a playing field. In many ways it is like playing rugby, but with a smile. These activities will provide not only male-centered power and strength while dancing, but also many other necessary skills for life. For example, the student will learn how to correctly hear, move and react to music under pressure, how to cooperate with others, and most importantly how to behave as a 'gentleman' both in and out of class by learning first hand traditional courtly manners and social etiquette. Such unique social skills are not usually taught to boys in public or private schools. Our 10-month program is based on the revered Vaganova Method of teaching ballet to boys. By offering to young men this free experience-enhancing program we provide a skill set platform to launch many different careers one of which is, of course, professional ballet". The IBC program is taught in the finest traditions of the Bolshoi heir to almost 300 years of excellence in ballet. There are no fees for this program.

All are invited . Open auditions will be held on Saturday, June 11, at 2:00 pm at 300 South Pennel Road, Suite #320, Media, Pa 19063

For additional information please contact Josie Singer at 610-459-9221 .

New Kids Sports Section of Fun Things

Sports are fast becoming a big part of my kid's lives. So, I decided to add a new section to the Fun Things blog. The Kids Sports section will include a list of clubs, organizations and providers of kids sports, teams, leagues and clubs. I started with what I know best, soccer and dance. For good measure I threw in baseball (no pun intended).

This is in no way a comprehensive list but, it's a good start. And, if you want to leave a comment about an organization that I missed or that you love, feel free to do so. As I get time over the next few months I try to add Lacrosse, Basketball, Football and Gymnastics.

Hopefully the list will avoid you having to search the web for these providers. Feel free to tell your friends about this new Delco resource.
