Brandywine Treasure Trail Passport Program Returns

Admission Savings at Brandywine Attractions This Summer!

The Brandywine Museums & Gardens Alliance is pleased to announce that the Treasure Trail Passport Program will return for summer 2012, with admission discounts to eleven Brandywine Valley attractions. The promotion is valid from Saturday, May 26, 2012 (the beginning of Memorial Day weekend) through Monday, September 3, 2012 (Labor Day). For just $35 per adult, or $75 for a family of two adults and up to three children, visitors receive a passport good for one-time admission at the Brandywine River Museum, Delaware Art Museum, Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Delaware Historical Society & Read House, Delaware Museum of Natural History, Hagley Museum and Library, Longwood Gardens, Mt. Cuba Center, Nemours Mansion & Gardens, Rockwood Park & Museum, and Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library. The sites are all within a ten-mile radius centered near Wilmington, Delaware. Visitors who return a completed passport will be entered into a drawing on October 1 for gift certificates from top local restaurants.

The passport program is funded in part by the Delaware Tourism Office, the Greater Wilmington Convention & Visitors Bureau, Amtrak, and Today Media, Inc.

Tickets are available online at www.visitwilmingtonde.com/pporder/. They can also be purchased at all all eleven sites, the Greater Wilmington Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the I-95 Welcome Center in Newark, DE.

PIRATE ADVENTURE FAMILY DAY

Sunday, November 6 beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Free admission until Noon

Children and their parents can discover a world of pirate adventure at the Brandywine River Museum's Pirate Adventure Family Day, Sunday, November 6, beginning at 11:30 a.m. "Weekend Buccaneers" can create their own pirate hats and look for treasure hidden throughout the special exhibition, N.C. Wyeth's Treasure Island, Classic Illustrations for a Classic Tale.

At 1:30 p.m. the 2002 Disney animated film Treasure Planet (PG) will be shown in the Lecture RoomT. The animators for this Disney film were highly influenced by N.C. Wyeth's Treasure Island illustrations and incorporated aspects of his style (color, lighting, scene design) into the movie's backgrounds and settings.

N.C. Wyeth's Treasure Island, Classic Illustrations for a Classic Tale (through November 20, 2011) celebrates the 100th anniversary of the publication of Robert Louis Stevenson's TreasureIsland with illustrations by N.C. Wyeth. The famous edition was a critical and popular success, established Wyeth among the period's foremost illustrators, and became the iconic Treasure Island for generations of readers. To mark the anniversary, all 16 dramatic paintings created by Wyeth will be on display together for the first time since they left the artist's studio a century ago. The exhibition also presents some Treasure Island productions of the last 100 years created by the many illustrators, theater and film directors and even digital application designers who have been influenced by Wyeth's imaginative vision. These productions are as varied as a 1915 stage version and Disney's 2002 movie Treasure Planet.

"Celebrating Caldecott" Children's Day

Families are invited to a day of art and reading adventures on April 1 with "Celebrating Caldecott Children's Day." Visitors may come any time from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and take a guided tour of the exhibition Drawing from a Story: Illustrations by Selected Caldecott Medal Winners, listen to stories, see animated versions of Maurice Sendak's books (Into the Night Kitchen, Where the Wild Things Are, and Chicken Soup with Rice) and create hands-on art projects. The program is free with regular museum admission. For information, contact the education office at education@brandywine.org or 610-388-8382.

Brandywine River Museum Offers "Celebrating Caldecott" Reading Reward Program
in Conjunction with
Drawing from a Story: Selected Caldecott Medal Winners Exhibition

To encourage a love of art and reading, the Brandywine River Museum will offer one free admission ticket to the exhibition Drawing from a Story: Selected Caldecott Medal Winners, to any child age 12 or under who reads, or has read to them, eight Caldecott Medal winning books.

On view from March 20 through May 23, Drawing from a Story: Selected Caldecott Medal Winners features the works of selected Caldecott winners from seven decades and over 30 books, including Maurice Sendak, Dorothy Lathrop, David Wiesner, Paul O. Zelinsky, Leo and Diane Dillon, Robert McCloskey, David Wiesner, and 2010 winner Jerry Pinkney, among many others. First awarded in 1938, the Caldecott Medal is considered the most prestigious award for children's book illustration.

Parents can download the form from the Museum's website at www.brandywinemuseum.org (available March 1). Once the form is completed with the names of the eight required books, and signed by a parent, simply bring the form to the Museum to receive one free admission ticket when purchasing admission. If a child is age 5 or under, coupon may be used for accompanying adult.

Thursday Mornings in February and March

Introduce children to the Brandywine River Museum through Read-Aloud Tours. Held on six Thursday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., the tours begin on February 4 and continue through March 11. The tours feature story time in the gallery followed by an art-making activity for children ages 3 to 6 accompanied by an adult.

Family Fun at the Brandywine River Museum

The holiday season brings a new exhibition as well as family favorites, including the traditional 0-gauge model trains and famous "critter" ornaments, at the Brandywine River Museum from now through January 10.
The special exhibition Scenes of the Season: will delight visitors with winter landscapes and classic images inspired by The Night before Christmas, A Christmas Carol and other holiday stories.
An integral part of A Brandywine Christmas is the museum's O-gauge train display. The trains run simultaneously on more than 2,000 feet of track, winding past a village, stone quarry, oil refinery, mountains, Herr Foods plant and running waterfall, as Santa and his sleigh fly overhead. A "rail cam," mounted on a snowplow, gives visitors a view from the perspective of a miniature locomotive driver.
The holiday display also includes a Victorian dollhouse (ca. 1905), complete with most of its original furnishings, including curtains, lights, and toys, and many of its original bisque dolls. Displayed with the front facade open, this extraordinary dollhouse also contains a collection of musical instruments and a nursery with a dollhouse of its own.

Take a Wonderful Walk Along the River with the Kids at Butterflies on the Brandywine

Saturday, May 9 10 to 11 a.m.

WHAT: On a special walk, children can explore the butterfly habitat in the Wildflower Gardens and learn which plants attract butterflies. Then, children can create a butterfly keepsake.

Volunteers Needed for Young Friends of the Brandywine Conservancy's

16th Annual Brandywine River Cleanup on April 18

WHAT: In conjunction with Earth Day, the Young Friends of the Brandywine Conservancy invite volunteers to help remove debris along the banks of the Brandywine River. Every year, thousands of pounds of trash are collected--from plastic bottles and fencing to lawn chairs, duck decoys and tires.
Volunteers are advised to wear long pants, heavy shoes or boots, and sunscreen. Gloves will be provided.

WHEN: Saturday, April 18, rain or shine

9 am. Registration at Brandywine River Museum parking lot

9:30 a.m. Teams depart for designated areas

12 noon Return to Brandywine River Museum for lunch provided by Buckley's Tavern to 1 p.m.
