The Festival of Lights opens at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, with a program of holiday music, guest speakers, refreshments, a visit from Santa Claus and the traditional lighting of the trees.

This year, the Festival is bigger and brighter with new lights, a Gingerbread house and train rides through the display during the first two weekends of entertainment.

The 2009 holiday scenes will include a new Gingerbread House, designed by Rosalie and Ham Morrall and constructed with assistance from Anne Cicala, plus a Victorian Village and the traditional Snoopy and Peanuts figures.

The first two weekends of the Festival will feature special activities.

• Dec. 5: Opening ceremonies at 5:30 p.m. feature holiday music by the Media Theatre State Street Miracles, a performance troupe of talented adults who have developmental disabilities. Two members of the Bridge Company Bravo, 6th Engineer Support Battalion U.S. Marine Corps Reserves – Captain Joshua S. Edwards and 1st Sgt. William J. Tirado -- will address the crowd and announce that residents can drop off holiday messages for men and women serving in the military at a drop-box at the Festival, or at the Government Center. Santa Claus will arrive and people can visit the heated concession tent for holiday treats and crafts.

• Dec. 6, 11, 12: Special events continue from 5:30-9:30 p.m. There will be free entertainment, crafts, train rides and concessions for sale on those nights. Entertainment is at 6:45 p.m. those evenings.

• Dec. 6: Tenor Michael D’Annunzio will perform at 6:45 p.m.

• Dec. 11: Makin’ Music will provide family entertainment at 6:45 p.m.

• Dec. 12: The Kennedy Family will perform holiday selections at 6:45 p.m.

The Festival of Lights runs 5:30-9:30 nightly

Dec. 5 through Jan. 31 in Rose Tree Park, Route 252, Upper Providence.

Concessions are sold at all concerts or you may bring your own tasty provisions.

Please remember that alcoholic beverages are prohibited throughout the park, and for everyone's safety and comfort, pets and smoking must remain outside the amphitheater.
There is no admission charge for the concerts.

What happens if it rains?
There are no rain dates for Summer Festival concerts that are cancelled due to inclement weather. Cancellation decisions are made right up until show time. At that time, there will be a recorded message on the parks phone (610-565-7410) indicating the show is cancelled. Rain in the hours preceding the show does not mean the show will be cancelled. Every effort is made to ensure the safety of the audience. If a thunder storm takes place, the concert will be ended.

Free to the public, the festival will celebrate Greek Food, Heritage, Culture and Entertainment and will promote Greek Heritage in Delaware County.
The Festival, held in support of The Greek American Heritage Society and The Passport to History Program of The Delaware County Historical Society, will feature a day of fun activities for the entire family.
Stage activities include Greek culture, entertainment and heritage through a variety of competitions.

Rudolph the Reindeer’s nose won’t be the only thing shining brightly in Delaware County skies this holiday season. The annual Delaware County Festival of Lights for Peace runs Dec. 5 through Jan. 11, with all new lights, decorated trees and displays in Rose Tree Park.
Thanks to the generosity of local sponsors and cooperative efforts of the Parks and Recreation Department and the Brandywine Conference and Visitors Bureau, the Festival of Lights for Peace has been revitalized.
To celebrate the sparkling new Victorian Village display, there will be three evenings of special music and events on opening weekend, Dec. 5-7, including a visit from Santa Claus.
Delaware County Council invites all residents to enjoy the Festival, which runs through Jan. 11. Visitors are encouraged to remember American troops serving overseas by dropping off a greeting or gift card in a special mailbox at the Festival.
A highlight of the new ornamentation is a Victorian Village display constructed by students at the Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades in Middletown. The Victorian facades were designed by local artist Rosalie Morrall and made with wood and paint donated by Home Depot.
The Festival of Lights display is on view nightly from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. People can drive or walk through the display.

First organized over six years ago by artists working at the Community Arts Center, the Fine Arts and Crafts Festival features original artwork by some of the areas finest artists and crafts people. This event is in keeping with the Arts Center’s mission and promotes the work of area artists while providing the opportunity for visitors to view some of the finest contemporary artists in the area.

The event also includes live music performances, artists’ demonstrations, children’s activities and fine food. The large park is the perfect setting for this growing festival providing ample free parking and lots of space for people to enjoy this unique arts event
