Charlie & Kiwi's Evolutionary Adventure at Delaware Museum of Natural History

Charlie & Kiwi's Evolutionary Adventure Opens January 25
Special exhibition explores evidence for how evolution works

Go on an evolutionary adventure and discover the link between dinosaurs and modern birds at Charlie & Kiwi's Evolutionary Adventure, on display January 25 - May 26, 2014 at the Delaware Museum of Natural History.

Using a kid-friendly storyline, Charlie & Kiwi's Evolutionary Adventure follows a boy named Charlie as he works on a book report about kiwis, a flightless bird found in New Zealand. To understand how kiwis evolved, Charlie travels back in time to the age of the dinosaurs. Visitors will learn with Charlie by unraveling puzzles, playing games, exploring computer interactives, and observing live birds.

The exhibition tackles the subject of evolution in a way that appeals to kids of all ages with drawings by Peter Reynolds, the award-winning illustrator of Judy Moody and other children's books.

Charlie & Kiwi's Evolutionary Adventure allows visitors to:
  • Find similarities in the skeletons of an Archaeopteryx, a bird that lived 150 million years ago, a Bambiraptor, a dinosaur that lived 75 million years ago, and a modern-day crow
  • Use a computer interactive to change a dinosaur into a flying Archaeopteryx
  • Distinguish between two different color variations of live budgies (parakeets)
  • Measure the beak size of several finches in a computer interactive game and determine whether each bird is likely to survive a season in which there are only big, tough seeds to eat
  • Learn about the evolution of kiwis through an animated movie illustrated by Peter Reynolds, an award-winning children's book illustrator
  • And much more, including discovery box activities, puzzles and games

Ice Age Imperials opens at the Delaware Museum of Natural History

Ice Age Imperials
Special exhibit explores giants of the Ice Age
 October 12, 2013 - January 5, 2014

Imagine traveling 20,000 years into the past to a period in our planet's history when the environment was dramatically different than we know it today.  Fierce cats, enormous mastodons and wooly mammoths, six-feet-tall beavers, and other giant creatures roamed the land, and every day was a struggle for survival.

This story will be presented like never before, through direct handling and interaction with real fossils from such ancient animals as the giant (five ton!) ground sloth, the cave bear, the largest breed of lion to ever live, and the herds of shaggy elephants that once covered North America.

Using two full-scale dioramas, a series of interactive displays, and other educational components, Ice Age Imperials will have visitors asking questions like: When and where was the Ice Age? What was life like in Delaware during that time? How do today's animals compare to their extinct Ice Age relatives?

Exhibit Highlights Include:
  • Full-Scale Dioramas: Two central dioramas feature the fierce-looking Sabertooth cat, the larger-than-life Wooly Mammoth, the Woodland Musk Ox, and the role of early human hunters.
  • Large And In Charge:  A three-sided display explores some of the largest mammals of the Ice Age, including the extinct Short-Faced Bear, Dire Wolf, and Giant Beaver.
  • Teamwork: Large 3-D puzzles of a Mastodon and Sabertooth cat require a team effort to assemble.
  • Dig It: An Ice Age fossil "dig box" reveals surprise remains of extinct creatures.
  • Learn More: Discover more about the Ice Age and the formation, nature, and movement of glaciers, as well as the massive size of Ice Age glaciers.
Ice Age Imperials explores how today's animal life compares to its extinct Ice Age relatives, and about the way of life of the earliest peoples, the Paleo-hunters, that once inhabited North America.  Ice Age Imperials will also provide a rare opportunity to "touch the Ice Age."

In conjunction with Rainforest Adventure, the Museum is proud to present two complimentary displays. In the Hall of Minerals, visitors can learn how tropical and temperate rainforests around the world are being protected through the efforts of The Nature Conservancy, one of the leading conservation organizations on the planet. And, along the hallway leading to Rainforest Adventure, visitors will marvel at an installation of stained glass that vividly depicts a tropical rainforest scene. Artist Rob Horan created these works of art specifically for display at the Museum and used specimens from the Museum's vast collections for inspiration and biological accuracy.

African Dinosaurs at the Delaware Museum of Natural History

Giants: African Dinosaurs opens Dec. 3
Explore discoveries made by celebrated paleontologist Paul Sereno, Ph.D.

The Sahara has proven to be an incredibly rich source of fossils. There, hidden in the sands of the African desert, world-renowned paleontologist Paul Sereno, Ph.D., found the discoveries of a lifetime. Giants: African Dinosaurs features these breakthroughs, with clues to the mystery of how shifting continents affected dinosaur evolution. The exhibit is on view at the Delaware Museum of Natural History from Dec. 3, 2011 through Feb. 26, 2012.

Created by Project Exploration, this interactive dinosaur experience transports visitors to a world of wonder and discovery. The highlights are two life-size, 25-foot-long skeletal casts of African carnivores uncovered by Sereno: the predatory Afrovenator, meaning "African hunter," found in northern Africa and dating to the mid-Jurassic between 164 and 161 million years ago; and the swift Deltadromeus, which lived approximately 95 million years ago in the late Cretaceous. A human skeleton andDeltadromeus are paired in similar positions to compare similarities in anatomy.

In the same formation as Afrovenator, Sereno found the fossil remains of a massive plant-eatingJobaria. This towering sauropod dates to the mid-Jurassic and may have been able to rear on its hind legs like an elephant. The exhibit features a six-foot-tall femur fossil that visitors can size themselves up against and marvel at this dinosaur's massive size.

Hands-on displays invite visitors to touch a cast of a juvenile Jobaria skull, the handprint of an adult Jobaria, and the petrified trunk of a tree from an ancient forest. Nearby visitors can look into the eyes of the Carcharodontosaurus flesh head - more than five feet long - and imagine being chased by one of the largest predators ever to walk the earth. Sereno's dramatic expeditions to the Sahara are detailed in a video and images so budding paleontologists can come away understanding what it took to make these exciting new dinosaur discoveries.
