Turtle Travels, a family-friendly new exhibit opening at the Delaware Museum of Natural History on June 18, will be accompanied by local turtle photography and sculptures.
James F. White, Jr., of the Delaware Nature Society and co-author of Amphibians and Reptiles of Delmarva contributed photographs and descriptions of Delaware turtles for display. Nearby, bronze sculptures by noted artist André Harvey will depict painted, loggerhead, box and other types of turtles.
Turtle Travels is an interactive special exhibit featuring a life-sized board game where visitors can experience life as a turtle:
● See live turtles in a special tank
● Watch a video shot by a sea-turtle
● Crawl under a turtle tunnel
● Build the arch of a turtle's shell
● Flip out the feet of a "Swiss Army turtle"
● Pose for photographs at the cutout "turtle traveler" display
● Use radio telemetry equipment
Turtle Travels is a traveling exhibit created by the Environmental Exhibit Collaborative (EEC), a group of natural science museums founded by the EcoTarium, Vermont's ECHO, and Squam Lakes Natural Sciences Center in New Hampshire. Sponsored by DuPont and Glenmede.

Summer Spree at the Community Arts Center is a visual arts camp for children and teens. Summer Spree has been around for 30 years and this year’s theme is Secret Spaces and Special Places. There are five sessions.
Session 1 is June 20th – June 24th

Days begin with Magic Mornings for ages 4-11 and are designed to give kids and pre-teens an
opportunity to try all kinds of art and explore drawing, painting, sculpting, tie-dye, storytelling and outdoor fun. In addition to the regularly scheduled morning activities, each of the sessions features special extras like building miniature garden thrones, decorating a solar powered fountain with tiles, using recycled and natural materials to create a mini secret garden terrarium, creating a secret space out of clay, or creating a miniature enchanted kingdom complete with magical creatures, buildings and secret hiding places.
At Afternoon Adventures for ages 4-11, children will continue to explore all kinds of visual arts.
Afternoons will have an increased focus on outdoor exploration, performing arts, music, special
activities and an organized outdoor sport. Each session also features a themed group project. Choose from Massive Mandala, the sacred Tibetan art form of sand mandalas, Wild Things, mask creation inspired by the book, Where the Wild Things Are, Everyday Extraordinary, creating a miniature world from recycled and found objects inspired by the book The Borrowers, Castles and Creatures, using Lego to create special places, or Mapping Mania, where children will make a map of the Arts Center.
Teen Studios are specially designed for ages 12 and up and provide small, supportive classes for all levels. Choose one class per time slot from a variety of classes like alternative art, architectural models, cartooning, cooking, drawing and pastel, hand built pottery, painting, photography, printmaking, etc.
For level ages 10-17, there is also Rock and Roll Summer, where students can learn rock guitar, bass,drums and vocals. At the conclusion of the final day of each session, parents, friends and family of participating students will be invited to an “in-studio, work –in-progress” performance of the material covered over the session.

This summer the magic returns to Tyler Arboretum with the opening of the Magical Habitats exhibition. The first exhibition of its kind in the Delaware Valley, Tyler’s 2011 seasonal exhibition will make its debut Memorial Day weekend, opening on Saturday, May 28 and runs through Sunday, October 30. The exhibition is free with admission and is open rain or shine during regular Arboretum hours.
The family-friendly exhibit celebrates the domain of fairies, gnomes and their enchanted friends with 23 unique custom exhibits, displays and structures created by local and regional artisans, woodworkers, sculptors, potters, builders and landscape architects.Spread out over a nearly one-mile route, the journey begins in the Mystical Orientation Station with an interactive introduction to our magical inhabitants.
Then, it’s off to explore the popular Crooked Goblin Shack, legendary Troll Bridge and “What Lies Beneath?”writing project. An unexplained door leads underground…it begs the question, what lies beneath? Answer the question by writing a story or a poem. Riverfront FamilyFest is a free, new, fun event for families with kids of all ages that turns Riverfront Wilmington into a playground for the day.
Families can spend the day together exploring Riverfront attractions, while participating in the "Amazing Riverfront Wilmington Race." Fun begins in the Chase Center with programs and entertainment on the "Get Up and Move Stage" or play on moon bounces, slides and a jumbo obstacle course, while visiting with exhibitors at the "Back to School Fair" marketing their services and selling their products.
