Fun Things recently had an opportunity to visit The American Helicopter Museum in West Chester, PA. This is a great way to spend a few hours. The kids can climb inside of several helicopters. Just being so close to these complex flying machines can keep the interest of both boys and girls. The staff was very informative. Take a few hours out of your weekend schedule and visit this local treasure. This short video tour will give you a good idea what to expect.

The American Helicopter Museum and Education Center is the nation’s premier aviation museum devoted exclusively to helicopters. They collect, restore and display historic aircraft and chronicle the origin and development of rotary wing aircraft.

Each year the Museum hosts thousands of visitors, school groups, families and senior citizens. Tourists of all ages from the U.S and abroad come here to witness the history and the future of the helicopter.

Appropriately the Museum is located in suburban Philadelphia where two of today’s major helicopter manufacturers have their roots, and where much of the earliest development of helicopters in the U.S took place.

Recently I had the chance to visit the Adventure Aquarium's all-new KidZone. The KidZone is a dedicated play space designed for kids 6 and under, that allows children to connect with nature by getting hands on and doing what they do best...play!

The KidZone is located on the second floor of the Aquarium in Zone C. It features vibrant and colorful décor, adorable characters, cool animals, touch species, and a series of interactive activities specifically designed to promote learning through play.

CELEBRATE THE POWER OF FREE EXPRESSION

DURING SPRING BREAK AT THE NATIONAL CONTITUTION CENTER

Celebrate the First Amendment and your constitutional right to free expression during Spring Break at the National Constitution Center! Visitors will enjoy live performances, songwriting workshops, and more, all just steps away from the must-see exhibition From Asbury Park to the Promised Land: The Life and Music of Bruce Springsteen. The Center’s Spring Break programming runs from Monday, April 2 through Sunday, April 15, 2012, and is FREE with museum admission.

During daily interactive programs, children and their families can discover how freedom of expression has allowed artists and musicians, like Bruce Springsteen, to inspire social change through words and music. In partnership with the Philadelphia Folksong Society’s Philadelphia Music Co-op, the Center will present local musicians who have been inspired by the words and music of Springsteen weekdays at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in the Grand Hall Lobby. Guests also can participate in daily harmonica workshops at 12:00 p.m. At activity tables, children can create music-inspired crafts, including album covers and guitar pins. In addition, the Philadelphia Folksong Society will host a special songwriting workshop on Saturday, April 14 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Advanced registration is required. Inside the From Asbury Park to the Promised Land exhibition, visitors can join in the “Decoding the Lyrics” program, which uses historical clues from newspapers and videos in order to delve deeper into the meaning of Springsteen’s most famous songs. Visitors will examine his lyrics line by line in order to decipher the true meaning of hits such as “Born in the U.S.A.,” “Streets of Philadelphia,” and “The Rising.” Children and their families also will have the opportunity to tour the exhibition using a special activity guide that explores how Springsteen has used music as a tool to express his First Amendment rights. Guests can even try their hand at songwriting by drawing inspiration from a personal story. Both activities are free with admission toFrom Asbury Park to the Promised Land.

Through September 3, 2012, the National Constitution Center is hosting From Asbury Park to the Promised Land: The Life and Music of Bruce Springsteen – never before seen outside of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. This first major exhibition about the American songwriter takes a comprehensive look at Springsteen’s career and catalog, from such early bands as Child, the Castiles and Steel Mill through his work with the E Street Band and as a solo artist. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to view more than 150 artifacts, including the Fender Esquire from the cover ofBorn to Run, the outfit Springsteen wore on the cover of Born in the U.S.A., numerous handwritten lyric manuscripts, and Springsteen’s 1960 Chevrolet Corvette.

Admission to From Asbury Park to the Promised Land: The Life and Music of Bruce Springsteen is $24.50 for adults, $23 for seniors and students, and $12 for children ages 4-12. Group rates also are available. Admission to the Center’s main exhibition, The Story of We the People, including the award-winning theater production Freedom Rising, is included.

In the spirit of Dr. King, visitors can participate in a quilting and sewing service project that benefits the local Philadelphia nonprofit, Women Against Abuse shelter. Participants will sew quilts, baby blankets and pillows for those in need while learning how quilting has brought communities together throughout history. Throughout the day children also will have the opportunity to make special crafts, including “Hands Across the World” chains and “I Have a Dream” mobiles.

“Two of a Kind” Sing-Along, 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

Visitors can take part in a sing-along concert with “Two of a Kind,” an award-winning, nationally touring, husband-wife duo who specialize in interactive musical programs for children. International Opera Theater presents The Heart of a Hero, 3:00 p.m.

A dramatic combination of gospel, opera, movement, poetry and spirituals,

International Opera Theater’s new work The Heart of a Hero tells the little known stories of minority Congressional Medal of Honor recipients: First Lieutenant John R. Fox of the 92nd Infantry Division, Private First Class David M. Gonzales of the 32nd Infantry Division and Combat Medic James K. Okubo of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. The Heart of a Hero features the International Opera Theater Multicultural Children's Choir, which will sing along side featured tenor Sergeant First Class Colin Eaton, a soloist with the United States Army Chorus.

Fighting for Democracy exhibition, all day

Visitors to the Center on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day also will have the final opportunity to experienceFighting for Democracy: Who is the “We” in “We the People”? on the last day of its three-month run. This groundbreaking exhibition, which pairs a must-see, multimedia exhibition from the Japanese American National Museum with an original theatrical production, traces the real-life experiences of a diverse group of seven Americans who bravely fought for equality, freedom and justice during the World War II era and helped paved the way for the Civil Rights movement and Dr. King’s work.

Fun Things Visits Dino Don's Dinosaurium at the Grantie Run Mall

Right before the Thanksgiving holiday I headed over to the Granite Run Mall to check out a cool new exhibit for kids called the Dinosaurium. Many locals have heard of Dino Don who resides in the Media area with his dinosaurs. Now you can view his collection of Dinosaurs now on display at the mall.

This mini museum is located in the old New York and Company store located on the lower level, just a few steps from Santa. The space reminds me of a circus tent. The walls are painted bold colors and it actually made me feel like I wasn’t in the mall at all.

Kids of all ages will love this exhibit, they get to see dinosaur bones up close. My daughters favorite part was Dino Dons Shootin Gallery. This reminded me of the games you play on the boardwalk or at a local carnival, when you take a nerf gun and short nerf darts at the dinosaurs. This was a huge hit with all the kids. They also had a separate area for kids to color and use dinosaur stamps.

Another part of the exhibit allowed kids to touch dinosaur fossils, and even dinosaur poop. My 5 year old was totally grossed out by this but the expression on her face was priceless. Another big hit with the kids was the sand pit where they could pretend to be a paleontologist and dig for dinosaur bones.

The dinosaur museum is a fun family friendly place to visit and the whole family will enjoy discovering and learning more about dinosaurs. Another exciting thing about this museum is it will continue to change periodically, over time, so the kids can go back again and discover something new.

Delaware Children’s Museum Speedway Days

Girls and boys, start your engines!

From September 17 through October 2, 2011, Delaware Children’s Museum guests can explore basic physics principles during the new “DCM Speedway Days,” a 16-day celebration featuring several race-themed programs throughout the Museum.

Children will find a colorful fleet of Roller Racers^® in the DCM’s Open Gallery, where they can exercise their bodies and brains . . . moving the handle bars from side to side and using physics to propel themselves.

Roller Racers employ an intriguing combination of lateral friction, force, and torque that lets riders make the vehicles move, and guests can try obstacle maneuvers, an all-out speed test, or free-form stylin’ at scheduled times.

Round a corner and you’ll find more physics activities in the DCM lab classrooms and exhibition galleries. Explore everyday scientific concepts that are also used in racing, including momentum, motion, machines, and magnets, in featured programs: “Don’t Be a Drag!” (aerodynamics), “Ready, Set . . . GO!” (momentum), and “Machine Mechanics” (simple machines).

A special program for preschoolers only, “Incline Design,” in the DCM’s early-childhood Training Wheels gallery will provide the youngest guests the a chance to play with the effects of different ramp angles and lengths on speed and momentum.

Philadelphia Zoo Unveils Treetop Trail

I was invited to see the Philadelphia Zoo unveil its newest exhibit, TreeTop Trail. Treetop Trail is a system of elevated passageways and lookouts, situated among the treetops for primates to travel through and explore. If you haven't been to the zoo in a while this is a very cool reason to visit. The Zoo has really made the exhibit feel that you are seeing the animals in their natural habitat, climbing and moving through the trees.

The mesh system encircles Impala Plaza, extending through the existing ring of trees. Monkeys and lemurs exit their indoor exhibits at the back of the Rare Animal Conservation Center and travel, crossing over the visitor path on each side of the Plaza. It's truly an experience that you need to see for yourself, my kids are still talking about it, they enjoyed seeing the animals move around and walk overhead.

While we were there we got to check out a special program that is only at the zoo until October 30th called X•tink•shun. X•tink•shun was created by the The Jim Henson Company™ to bring the overall message of appreciating and understanding threatened wildlife and nature in all its amazing richness. There are live theatrical puppet presentations and street performance in Bank of America Eco-Stages situated throughout the Zoo. Each stage stars a puppet character that educates and engages their audience on the plight of endangered animals and habitats. Each performance delivers an upbeat message that you can make a difference; your voice can be heard.

If you haven't visited the Philadelphia Zoo this year defiantly add it to you list of things to do with your kids this summer or even in the fall. My kids were so excited to see how the giraffe, Abigail, grew from last year when she was only a baby. You can also check out the otter pup, Thor, that recently made his swimming debut in July.

Last week, I was invited to Ikea, Conshohocken to check out their new 2012 catalog. I am a huge fan of Ikea's products and it truly is a family friendly place to take the kids while you shop. Now, you may be wondering how Ikea can be a fun thing to do with kids. :

This supervised play area in the entrance lobby is for children between the heights of 37"-54" who are potty-trained (no pull-ups). Kids can play in this safe, imaginative environment for up to an hour! And it's Free

Starting Friday, July 22, Adventure Aquarium will introduce a brand new concept:“Summer Fun Nights,” extended hours in the summer months to provide guests with 3 extra hours of fun at America’s Most Touchable Aquarium. On weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights) from July 22 through Aug 14, Adventure Aquarium is extending its operating hours from 5 pm to 8 pm (Aquarium opens at 9:30 AM), so that guests can take full advantage of the added daylight that summer brings.

“Summer Fun Nights were created in response to guest feedback expressing a desire to visit Adventure Aquarium in the evening, particularly in the summer months,” said Kevin Keppel, the Aquarium’s Executive Director. “These extended summer hours are just another way we’re able to make a trip to Adventure Aquarium convenient and accessible for guests.”
