CELEBRATE THE POWER OF FREE EXPRESSION
DURING SPRING BREAK AT THE NATIONAL CONTITUTION CENTER
Celebrate the First Amendment and your constitutional right to free expression during Spring Break at the National Constitution Center! Visitors will enjoy live performances, songwriting workshops, and more, all just steps away from the must-see exhibition From Asbury Park to the Promised Land: The Life and Music of Bruce Springsteen. The Center’s Spring Break programming runs from Monday, April 2 through Sunday, April 15, 2012, and is FREE with museum admission.
During daily interactive programs, children and their families can discover how freedom of expression has allowed artists and musicians, like Bruce Springsteen, to inspire social change through words and music. In partnership with the Philadelphia Folksong Society’s Philadelphia Music Co-op, the Center will present local musicians who have been inspired by the words and music of Springsteen weekdays at 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. in the Grand Hall Lobby. Guests also can participate in daily harmonica workshops at 12:00 p.m. At activity tables, children can create music-inspired crafts, including album covers and guitar pins. In addition, the Philadelphia Folksong Society will host a special songwriting workshop on Saturday, April 14 from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Advanced registration is required. Inside the From Asbury Park to the Promised Land exhibition, visitors can join in the “Decoding the Lyrics” program, which uses historical clues from newspapers and videos in order to delve deeper into the meaning of Springsteen’s most famous songs. Visitors will examine his lyrics line by line in order to decipher the true meaning of hits such as “Born in the U.S.A.,” “Streets of Philadelphia,” and “The Rising.” Children and their families also will have the opportunity to tour the exhibition using a special activity guide that explores how Springsteen has used music as a tool to express his First Amendment rights. Guests can even try their hand at songwriting by drawing inspiration from a personal story. Both activities are free with admission toFrom Asbury Park to the Promised Land.
Through September 3, 2012, the National Constitution Center is hosting From Asbury Park to the Promised Land: The Life and Music of Bruce Springsteen – never before seen outside of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. This first major exhibition about the American songwriter takes a comprehensive look at Springsteen’s career and catalog, from such early bands as Child, the Castiles and Steel Mill through his work with the E Street Band and as a solo artist. Visitors will have the rare opportunity to view more than 150 artifacts, including the Fender Esquire from the cover ofBorn to Run, the outfit Springsteen wore on the cover of Born in the U.S.A., numerous handwritten lyric manuscripts, and Springsteen’s 1960 Chevrolet Corvette.
Admission to From Asbury Park to the Promised Land: The Life and Music of Bruce Springsteen is $24.50 for adults, $23 for seniors and students, and $12 for children ages 4-12. Group rates also are available. Admission to the Center’s main exhibition, The Story of We the People, including the award-winning theater production Freedom Rising, is included.
